The Rise and Rise of Gaia Online

When an internet site inspires this kind of hate, you know it’s a big enough phenomenon to be an investment opportunity:

Gaia Online is a message board/Social Network/MMORPG/Chat room/anything else you can think of that caters to those who enjoy non-pornographic hentai, video games, and shitty online role-playing. The main draw is that you get to buy items in a grossly over-inflated fake economy in order to dress up your anime-style avatar. The time it takes you to earn the gold for a simple shirt can be used to balance your checkbook, buy a real shirt for yourself, and find a message board that isn’t complete crap. Gaia Online is the largest English forum-based community on the internet, though most users don’t speak anything the rest of us would recognize as English. It is also possibly the largest concentrated amount of stupid on the Internet.” — Encyclopedia Dramatica

Gaia Online LOL

I’m not 100% sure why it’s called Gaia, since I thought that was the Greek goddess of earth or that theory about everything being ONE. I think Gaia was voiced by Whoopi (spelling?) Goldberg in Captain Planet (i is right, see proofs) - don’t ask me why I remember that.

I definitely disagree with Gaia being the largest concentrated amount of stupid on the internet (except for the life issues forum where “issues” is somewhat of an understatement). Instead, Gaia is probably the largest assembly of wapanese, i.e. wannabe japanese, on the internets. Kawaii!!11onesix. In that, it is slightly ghey, but in the best possible sense of that term. Hey, the WoW Shaman forums are a lot worse.

Benchmark and Redpoint put in $8.93M in June last year and were joined by Duff, Ackermann & Goodrich for another round of $12M in March 07. I wonder what the post was after that second round…guess it was pre Club Penguin so that’s a fantastic deal.

I am a little skeptical about the traffic numbers below because they seem contradictory (NB: Alexa is reach, Compete is uniques). Last I’ve heard, Gaia was well on its way to hitting the 1.5M uniques a month (in comparison, Club Penguin has around 2.5M):

my comment is that gaia online is growing pretty rapidly since this summer since I started but the thing is that Gaia still isn’t as good as runescape. more people play runescape instead of gaia due to the graphics I guess but gaia is more relistic in more ways then one. I believe that gaia is better then runescape because you can design your account and charactor to your likeing and it is more modern then runescape in so many ways.
